Kindergarten education on Sumba

Sumba is a sparsely populated island in the east of Indonesia. In many villages the adat, the local tradition, still strongly shapes life. The costs around events such as marriage and death are high, leaving families behind in debt. Education is therefore often not a priority.

In two places, Andakapeta and Weli Eti, enthusiastic teams have started a kindergarten. This happens through the church community in Kupang on Timor, which visits these areas and organises social activities there too. They began with songs and movement lessons; Setia first provided a ball and a guitar, then tables, little chairs and learning materials.

The little schools have grown and won the trust of the community. The next step is training the teachers and adding to the learning materials, so the schools can also be officially recognised by the government.
